See How to Maximize Traction on any Surface
The Traxxas Rustler 4X4 VXL comes standard with a slipper clutch for full-time 4WD performance. This allows the motor to send power to the front and rear wheels equally at all times. Punch the throttle, especially with 3S LiPo power, and the Rustler will wheelie for days. For more refined handling or improved power delivery in rough conditions, try replacing the standard slipper clutch with the 6780 Torque-Biasing Center Drive.


The Torque Biasing Center Drive minimizes “unloading” (sending disproportionate power) to the front wheels when subjected to the Rustler 4X4 VXL’s high power output. Its robust construction features a steel spur gear and spider gears along with a heavy-duty cast alloy case. The center drive comes pre-filled with extra-heavy 1M weight silicone fluid. This enables it to maximize power to the wheels with the most traction to improve cornering speeds and maintain control on severe terrain.

You can use the tool kit that comes with the Rustler to install all the parts in this article, but upgrading your tools can be just as important as your vehicle modifications. The Traxxas 8712 tool kit includes premium hex bits and nut drivers to perform upgrades or maintenance on your Traxxas model. The kit also includes an overmolded grip and convenient embroidered storage case.
1) Remove the body so you can access the chassis. The wheels may remain on, but you may find it easier to work with them removed. Use the 4-way wrench supplied with the Rustler 4X4 or a 7 mm nut driver to remove the wheels. Remove the two 4x12 mm button-head screws that secure the rear suspension module from the top. Next, turn the chassis over, and remove the two 4x12 mm button-head screws the secure the rear suspension module from the bottom.



2) Remove the rear suspension module by pulling it straight back from the chassis. You can now access the slipper clutch. Remove the slipper clutch assembly by pulling it slightly down and back.



3) You'll need to transfer the existing 10x15 mm bearing on the slipper clutch to the Torque Biasing Center Drive. Pull it straight away from the spur gear. No additional disassembly is required to remove the bearing, it will slide past the spring, adjusting nut, and drive hub. Reinstall the bearing onto the center differential. Make sure it is fully seated against the spur gear.



4) Insert the Center Drive into the chassis. Make sure the drive hub engages the center driveshaft, and the driveshaft is engaged with the front gearbox’s drive hub. Confirm the Center Drive is fully seated in the chassis, and meshing with the pinion.



5) Before reattaching the rear suspension module, orient the flat sides on the center drive with the slot in the rear gearbox so both are straight up and down. This will make it easier for them to fit together.


6) Align the rear suspension module with the chassis and push it straight in. You may need to jiggle it slightly so the center drive's shaft engages the gearbox. Secure the rear suspension module with the 4X12 mm button-head screws removed previously. Reinstall the wheels and body, and your Rustler 4X4 is ready to hit the dirt with improved handling and control.
